MS Exchange Server = Admin Torture Box
It is really unfortunate that Microsoft used the Jet Database engine for the Exchange Server 2003 message store. As our company was switching over to Exchange, my reading prepared me for corruption issues and lengthy off-line maintenance. Now I am going through the long process of fixing it up due to some odd corruption issues. The literature tells administrators to do some periodic maintenance, but it unfortunately has to be done with the system taken off-line. The process takes hours. Yes, Exchange has some very useful features for the end-user, but it sure makes the life of the admin difficult. Coming from a Unix background, the idea of pulling a critical service off-line for a few hours every quarter seems crazy. Oh well. I guess I'll go check on the process now.
